Moving Abroad

How to tell elderly parents and relatives on our emigration decision and prepare proper arrangements for them?

Emigration is a big change to your parents or elderly members of the family, especially for those elderly who shifted their focus to family after retirement, or the family member(s) who is going to move abroad is the caregiver of the elderly.

Firstly, you may discuss with the elderly members at least a few months to half year in advance, so that they feel being respected with sufficient time to digest the changes. During the discussion, you can also invite other family member to support the elderly.

You can assure them that they are not being abandoned. You still commit to take care them together with other family members through discussing about the long-term care plan and division of responsibilities upon implementing the care plan, ranging from financial arrangements, health plans, leisure activities, etc. In the meantime, you can help the elderly to reinforce social connections with friends, neighbours, and other supportive community resources, e.g. Integrated Family Service Centre (IFSC) and District Elderly Community Centre (DECC).
