Life Planning
High school students don’t know much how to plan their future. As parents, we are worried about their life planning. How can we help them?
In this situation, parents can try the following ways:
First, "listen first, comment less"
To start the conversation, parents can listen instead of preaching at their children to reflect and understand their abilities and interests. At the same time, using encouragement rather than criticism can enhance the motivation of children to plan for their future. The lack of self-understanding may only be superficial, but in fact, they have dreams and dare not say it.
Second, "teach students according to their aptitude"
Children are unique, and there is no theoretical knowledge learnt from a book can be applied to all children. Parents should guide their children to explore future possibilities based on their interests and aptitudes and determine their life goals planning.
Third, "let the children decide."
Remember not to rush for a while, letting children choose by themselves is also an important part of life planning. In the end, it is up to the children to decide their future. There is no right or wrong way. Remember that the information provided by parents is only "suggestions", not "answers."
If parents want to find professional advice, you can try to seek help from the school social workers or Integrated Youth Service Centres near you to plan share with you the future together with their children.
